The picture above shows one of the siren towers that made up Portland's attack warning system back in the 1950's. These sirens were to sound if Russian bombers carrying H-bombs were headed on a bombing mission to our city.Below, a map shows the strategic placement of the 7 sirens throughout the city. Each circle radius is 10,000 feet or about 2 miles.
Those air raid sirens scared the crap outta me when I was a little kid. I’d be playing in the peace of my own yard, when out of the blue, the most terrifying wail would consume the neighborhood. I would have nightmares about the sirens that I can still remember to this day.
